Warehouse Safety Signs in India: What Every 3PL and Logistics Facility Must Display

By Super Admin ·

Why Warehouses Need More Signs Than Most People Think

India's warehouse and logistics sector has exploded in the past decade — driven by e-commerce, GST-consolidated distribution, and the growth of organised 3PL providers. Modern warehouses in India range from 20,000 to 5,00,000 sq.ft. and employ hundreds of workers operating forklifts, reach trucks, conveyors, and automated sorting systems.

Yet warehouse safety signage is often an afterthought. Unlike factories — where safety culture has decades of history — many warehouses operate with minimal signage, treating it as "a factory thing." Under the OSH Code 2020, this is no longer acceptable. Any establishment with 10+ workers is covered.

The Five Critical Warehouse Zones

1. Forklift Operating Areas

Forklift-pedestrian collisions are the #1 source of warehouse injuries. Required signs:

  • "Warning: Forklift Operating Area" — at every forklift zone entry
  • "Pedestrians Keep to Marked Walkways"
  • "Sound Horn at Intersections"
  • Speed limit signs (typically 8-10 km/h inside, 5 km/h near pedestrian areas)
  • "High-Vis Vest Mandatory" in forklift operating zones
  • "Seatbelt Required" on every forklift

2. Racking Zones

  • Maximum rack load capacity signs on every bay (SWL per shelf and per bay)
  • "Do Not Climb Racking" signs
  • "Report Damaged Racking Immediately"
  • "Danger: Falling Objects" — at ends of aisles where pallets could shift
  • Aisle identification signs — A, B, C coding for each aisle

3. Loading Docks

  • "Danger: Dock Edge" — at every open dock
  • "Chock Wheels Before Loading/Unloading"
  • "Reversing Vehicles — Stand Clear"
  • Dock leveller operation signs
  • Safety shoes and hi-vis vest mandatory

4. Charging Areas (Battery/EV)

  • "Danger: Battery Charging — No Smoking / No Open Flame"
  • "Hydrogen Gas — Ensure Ventilation" (lead-acid batteries release hydrogen during charging)
  • Eye wash station sign (acid handling risk)
  • Fire extinguisher location sign

5. Cold Storage

  • "Warning: Low Temperature / Hypothermia Risk"
  • Cold-weather PPE mandatory signs (insulated gloves, jacket, boots)
  • Emergency release on cold room doors — clearly identified
  • Time-limit warning signs — work duration limits in sub-zero environments

E-Commerce-Specific Additions

Modern e-commerce fulfilment centres have additional signage needs:

  • Conveyor belt hazard signs — "Keep Hands Clear" and "Hair/Loose Clothing Hazard"
  • Mezzanine guard rail and edge protection signs
  • Sortation area pedestrian restriction signs
  • Ergonomic lifting instruction signs at packing stations
