Safety Signage for New Factory Setup in India: The Complete Procurement Timeline
The New Factory Signage Timeline
Setting up a new factory in India is an intensely coordinated effort — civil construction, utility installation, machine commissioning, workforce recruitment, licence applications, and a hundred other workstreams. Safety signage often falls to the bottom of the list, resulting in a frantic last-minute scramble when the factory inspector visits for the licence or when the customer audit is scheduled. This timeline ensures signage is planned properly.
Phase 1: During Construction (6-3 Months Before Commissioning)
Temporary Construction Signs
- Construction site safety signs (hard hat, safety shoes, hi-vis)
- Excavation and fall hazard warnings
- Heavy vehicle movement signs
- Contractor safety rules board
Action: Order temporary correx board signs. These will be replaced with permanent signs later.
Architecture/Layout Review
- Obtain final floor plans from the architect/civil contractor
- Identify all entry/exit points
- Map fire extinguisher locations (per fire consultant's plan)
- Map electrical panel locations
- Define production zones
Action: Send floor plans to your signage supplier for a comprehensive sign schedule.
Phase 2: Pre-Commissioning (3-1 Month Before)
Permanent Sign Order
- Finalise sign schedule (type, quantity, size, material, language for every sign)
- Place order with manufacturer (allow 7-10 working days for custom/bilingual signs)
- Order mounting hardware
Evacuation Plans
- Commission evacuation plan boards based on final floor plans
- Include all exits, fire equipment, assembly points, you-are-here markers
Phase 3: Installation (2-1 Week Before Commissioning)
Installation Priority Order
- Fire safety signs first — fire extinguisher, hose reel, call point, exit signs
- Emergency signs — exit directions, assembly point, evacuation plans
- Zone entry signs — PPE mandatory, restricted area, hazard warnings
- Machine-level signs — after machines are installed and commissioned
- Information and welfare signs — toilets, drinking water, canteen, first aid
Phase 4: Factory Licence Inspection
When the factory inspector visits for the operating licence under the Factories Act / OSH Code, they check:
- Fire safety signs per NBC / fire NOC requirements
- Emergency exit signage (photoluminescent)
- Zone-wise PPE signage
- Electrical safety signs
- Welfare facility signs
- Assembly point and evacuation plans
Tip: Schedule your signage installation before the inspector visit. "Signs are on order" is not an acceptable answer during an inspection.
Phase 5: Post-Commissioning (First Month of Operations)
- Walk every zone with the signage schedule and verify 100% installation
- Photograph every installed sign for audit records
- Create a sign register (location, type, installation date, next inspection date)
- Brief all workers on sign meanings during safety induction
