PPE Safety Signs Explained: IS 9457 Symbols for Every Type of Personal Protective Equipment
The Blue Circle Family: Mandatory PPE Signs
Every factory in India displays at least some PPE mandatory signs — those blue circles with white pictograms. But are you using the right pictograms for the right PPE? IS 9457 defines specific symbols for each type of PPE, and using the wrong symbol is a compliance failure.
The Complete PPE Sign Library
Head Protection
- IS 9457 M014 — Safety Helmet Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white helmet symbol. Required at every production zone entry where falling objects or head-impact hazards exist.
- When to display: Production floors, construction areas, warehouses with overhead racking, crane bays, loading docks.
- Common mistake: Using a generic "hard hat" clip-art instead of the IS 9457 standard symbol.
Eye Protection
- IS 9457 M004 — Eye Protection Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white safety glasses symbol.
- IS 9457 M007 — Safety Goggles Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white goggle symbol (for splash/chemical zones).
- IS 9457 M008 — Welding Mask Must Be Worn: For welding zones specifically.
- Common mistake: Using the safety glasses symbol where goggles are required (chemical splash zones require goggles, not glasses).
Hearing Protection
- IS 9457 M003 — Ear Protection Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white ear muff/plug symbol.
- When to display: Any area exceeding 85 dB (press shops, grinding, generator rooms, testing areas). Required by law under the Factories Act for noise levels above 90 dB.
Foot Protection
- IS 9457 M008 — Safety Footwear Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white safety boot symbol.
- When to display: Virtually every production area. Safety boots protect against falling objects, sharp objects, chemical splash, and electrical contact depending on the boot type.
Hand Protection
- IS 9457 M009 — Safety Gloves Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white glove symbol.
- For chemical handling: Specify the glove type on the supplementary text (e.g., "Nitrile Chemical Gloves Required" or "Heat-Resistant Gloves Required").
Respiratory Protection
- IS 9457 M017 — Respiratory Protection Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white mask/respirator symbol.
- When to display: Dust-generating areas, paint shops, chemical handling zones, pharmaceutical API areas.
- Important: The sign should specify the type of respiratory protection where possible (dust mask, half-face respirator, full-face respirator, SCBA).
Body Protection
- IS 9457 M010 — Protective Clothing Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white coverall symbol.
- Used in: Chemical plants, pharmaceutical plants, paint shops, asbestos removal.
Fall Protection
- IS 9457 M018 — Safety Harness Must Be Worn: Blue circle with white harness symbol.
- When to display: Any work at height above 2 metres — roof access, scaffolding, elevated platforms, mezzanines without guard rails.
Combination PPE Signs
Many zones require multiple types of PPE simultaneously. Rather than displaying 5 separate blue circles, use a combination PPE board that shows all required PPE for that zone on a single sign. This is standard IS 9457 practice and much more effective — workers see all requirements at a glance.
All our PPE signs use authentic IS 9457/ISO 7010 pictograms. Browse PPE mandatory signs or order custom combination PPE boards for your specific zones.
