Photoluminescent Safety Signs: Why Glow-in-Dark Exit Signs Are Now Mandatory in India
The 3 AM Test: What Happens When the Lights Go Out?
Your factory runs a night shift. At 3 AM, a fire breaks out. Power trips instantly. The emergency generator fails to start. Your factory is pitch dark, filling with smoke, and 150 workers need to find the exits. Can your workers see the exit signs?
Reflective signs need a light source. In total darkness, they are invisible. This is why the NBC 2016 and IS 9457 mandate photoluminescent material for emergency exit signs — signs that actively glow 8-12 hours after the lights go out.
What Is Photoluminescent Material?
Modern industrial photoluminescent materials use strontium aluminate pigments that absorb light energy during normal hours and release it as visible green glow in darkness. Unlike cheap zinc sulphide stickers that fade in 20-30 minutes, strontium aluminate glows for 8-12 hours after just 15 minutes of normal room lighting.
The Legal Requirement
- NBC 2016 Part 4 requires photoluminescent safety way guidance for all emergency escape routes
- IS 9457:2004 specifies photoluminescent material for emergency condition signs
- IS 16061 specifies performance requirements — charging time, glow duration, minimum luminance levels
- OSH Code 2020 reinforces NBC requirements for all covered establishments
Where Photoluminescent Signs Are Mandatory
- Above every emergency exit door
- Along the entire evacuation route
- At every stairwell entry and landing
- At floor level (300mm from floor) for smoke conditions
IS 16061 Performance Requirements
| Parameter | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Charging time | Maximum 15 minutes under ≥25 lux |
| Luminance at 10 min | ≥ 65 mcd/m² |
| Luminance at 60 min | ≥ 10 mcd/m² |
| Glow duration | Minimum 8 hours |
Why Cheap Glow Signs Fail
| Type | Pigment | Glow Duration | IS 16061? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cheap stickers | Zinc Sulphide | 20-40 min | No |
| Mid-range | Strontium Aluminate (low) | 2-4 hours | Borderline |
| IS 16061 compliant | Strontium Aluminate (industrial) | 8-12 hours | Yes |
Our signs use industrial-grade strontium aluminate meeting IS 16061. We provide compliance certificates on request.
The Economics
IS 16061-compliant photoluminescent exit sign: ₹300-₹600. Typical factory needs 10-25 signs. Total: ₹3,000-₹15,000. That is the cost of a decent office chair. The alternative — criminal liability for worker fatalities due to unmarked exits — is incalculable.
