Mining Safety Signs in India: DGMS Requirements Every Mine Operator Must Follow

By Super Admin ·

Mining: India's Most Hazardous Industry

The mining sector has the highest fatality rate per worker of any industry in India. The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) regulates mine safety, and their requirements for safety signage are among the most stringent in any Indian industry.

DGMS Signage Requirements

Mine Entry and Surface

  • Mine identification board — mine name, owner, manager, first-aider-in-charge
  • "Authorised Entry Only — Valid Lamp and Cap Required" (underground mines)
  • "All Persons Must Report to Lamproom Before Descending"
  • Maximum number of persons per cage/skip
  • Emergency contact board — mine rescue station, hospital, DGMS inspector

Underground Mines

  • Direction and distance signs — at every junction in the mine roadway
  • "Danger: Roof Fall Risk" — in areas with geological instability
  • "Gas Testing Required Before Entry" — for gassy mines (methane detection)
  • "No Smoking / No Naked Light" — mandatory in all coal mines and gassy metalliferous mines
  • "Ventilation Door — Keep Closed"
  • "Refuge Chamber" identification and direction signs
  • "Shot Firing in Progress — Do Not Enter" — for blasting operations
  • Emergency escape route signs — photoluminescent, low-level

Open Cast Mines

  • "Danger: Open Pit Edge" — along the benches
  • "Blasting Zone — Keep Clear"
  • HEMM (Heavy Earth Moving Machinery) warning signs
  • "Dump Zone — Reversing Vehicles"
  • Speed limit signs on haul roads
  • "Unstable Ground — Do Not Stand" — at overburden dump edges

Processing Plants

  • Crusher area warning signs — crush hazard, noise, dust
  • Conveyor belt hazard signs
  • Chemical processing warnings — cyanide (gold processing), acid (leaching)
  • Tailings dam warning signs

Material Requirements for Mining

Mining environments are extremely harsh. Sign materials must withstand:

  • Underground humidity (near 100% in some mines)
  • Dust accumulation (requires regular cleaning or sealed surface)
  • Vibration from blasting
  • Vehicle impact (signs near haul roads must be robust)

Recommended materials: Aluminium sheet for surface installations, stainless steel for underground, and high-visibility retro-reflective sheeting for haul roads.
