IS 9457:2004 — India's National Standard for Safety Signs Explained Simply

By Super Admin ·

What Is IS 9457 and Why Should You Care?

Every country needs a standard that defines what a safety sign looks like, what colours mean, and how big the symbols need to be. In India, that standard is IS 9457:2004, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It is officially titled "Fire Safety and Fire Protection — Safety Signs for Buildings" but its scope extends far beyond fire safety to cover all categories of safety signs used in Indian workplaces.

Think of IS 9457 as the "recipe book" for safety signs. The OSH Code tells you that you need signs (the menu), but IS 9457 tells you exactly how to make them — the colours, the symbol dimensions, the contrast ratios, the viewing distances. If your signs do not follow this recipe, they are like a doctor's prescription written in illegible handwriting: technically present, but practically useless.

The Four Safety Sign Categories

IS 9457, closely aligned with the international ISO 7010 standard, defines four primary categories of safety signs. Each category has a specific colour and shape combination:

1. Prohibition Signs — "Do Not Do This"

  • Shape: Circle with diagonal bar
  • Colours: Red circle and bar on white background, black pictogram
  • Red must cover ≥35% of the sign area
  • Examples: No Smoking, No Entry, No Naked Flame, No Mobile Phones

The red circle with the diagonal bar is universally understood — it works the same way whether you are in a factory in Pune or a railway station in Paris.

2. Warning Signs — "Be Careful"

  • Shape: Equilateral triangle (point up)
  • Colours: Yellow triangle with black border and black pictogram
  • Yellow must cover ≥50% of the sign area
  • Examples: Electrical Hazard, Chemical Hazard, Slippery Surface, Falling Objects

3. Mandatory Action Signs — "You Must Do This"

  • Shape: Circle (filled)
  • Colours: Blue circle with white pictogram
  • Blue must cover ≥50% of the sign area
  • Examples: Wear Safety Helmet, Wear Eye Protection, Wear Safety Shoes, Wear Ear Protection

4. Safe Condition / Emergency Signs — "Safety Is This Way"

  • Shape: Rectangle or square
  • Colours: Green background with white pictogram and text
  • Green must cover ≥50% of the sign area
  • Examples: Emergency Exit, Fire Exit Direction, First Aid, Assembly Point

Green means safety. In an emergency, a photoluminescent green exit sign glowing in the darkness is quite literally the difference between life and death. IS 9457 requires emergency route signs to be made of photoluminescent material.

Symbol Size and Viewing Distance

IS 9457 specifies minimum symbol heights based on the intended viewing distance:

Viewing DistanceMinimum Symbol HeightTypical Sign Size
Up to 5 metres50 mm200 × 200 mm
Up to 10 metres100 mm300 × 300 mm
Up to 20 metres200 mm600 × 450 mm
Up to 30 metres300 mmLarge format signs

A 100mm sign in a 500-square-metre production hall is like whispering in a stadium — technically you are communicating, but nobody is hearing the message. Factory inspectors routinely flag undersized signs.

Colour Specifications — PMS Matching Matters

IS 9457 does not just say "red" — it specifies exact colour references. Signs printed in a slightly different shade may look fine to the naked eye but can technically fail a compliance check. We colour-match all our signs to IS 9457 specifications using Pantone (PMS) colour references during print production.

Supplementary Text

IS 9457 permits supplementary text below the pictogram. In the Indian context, this is particularly important because:

  • Worker literacy levels vary significantly across states and industries
  • The OSH Code requires signs to be in a language understood by workers
  • Many states require bilingual signs (Hindi + regional language)

Text must be in a legible, sans-serif font with adequate contrast against the background.

IS 9457 vs ISO 7010

IS 9457 is the legally applicable standard in India, and it is largely harmonised with ISO 7010. For factories serving international clients who audit against ISO 7010, we offer dual-compliant signs.
