Fire Safety Signs Required in Indian Factories Under National Building Code + OSH Code

By Super Admin ·

Fire Safety Signs — The Most Inspected Category

If there is one category of safety signs that every Indian factory needs — regardless of industry, size, or location — it is fire safety signage. Fire safety signs are the first things a factory inspector checks.

The regulatory framework sits at the intersection of two major codes: the National Building Code of India 2016 (NBC 2016) and the OSH Code 2020. India records over 17,000 fire-related deaths annually. A ₹300 photoluminescent exit sign, properly placed, could change the outcome.

1. Emergency Exit Signs — The Most Critical

  • Required at: Every exit door, every stairwell entry, every emergency escape route
  • Material: Photoluminescent (glow-in-dark) — MANDATORY under NBC 2016
  • Standard: IS 9457 (green background, white running man symbol and arrow)
  • Mounting height: Above exit doors (2.0-2.5m) plus low level (300mm from floor) for smoke conditions
  • Viewing distance: Legible from at least 20 metres

Why photoluminescent? In a fire with total power failure, reflective signs are invisible. Photoluminescent signs actively glow for 8-12 hours. In a smoke-darkened corridor, they are literally the only thing you can see.

2. Fire Extinguisher Location Signs

  • Required at: Directly above or adjacent to every fire extinguisher mounting point
  • Standard: Red square/rectangle with white fire extinguisher symbol (IS 9457)
  • Supplementary: Extinguisher type identification (ABC Dry Powder, CO2, Water, Foam)

3. Fire Hose Reel and Hydrant Signs

  • Red square signs with white hose reel symbol at every fire hose reel cabinet
  • Fire hydrant location signs at external hydrant points

4. Fire Alarm Call Point Signs

  • Required at every manual call point, at every floor landing, at every exit, and at 30-metre intervals along escape routes

5. Floor-Wise Evacuation Plans

  • Mandatory in: All multi-storey buildings and factories with fire NOC
  • Content: Floor plan, exit routes, fire equipment locations, assembly point, "You Are Here" marker
  • Size: Minimum A3, preferably A2 for floors above 500 sq.m.

6. Assembly Point Sign

  • Green rectangle, white assembly point symbol, visible from all evacuation route endpoints

OSH Code Fire Safety Additions

  • "Do Not Use Lift During Fire" — at every lift landing (most commonly missed sign)
  • Fire door "Keep Shut" signs
  • Hot work permit zones — fire safety signs at every welding/cutting area
  • "Smoking Prohibited" — near flammable material storage

Common Mistakes That Fail Inspections

  1. Using reflective instead of photoluminescent exit signs
  2. Exit signs pointing the wrong direction
  3. Missing "Do Not Use Lift" signs
  4. Outdated evacuation plans
  5. Fire extinguisher signs missing for hidden extinguishers
