Electrical Safety Signs in Indian Factories: IE Rules, CEA Regulations, and IS 9457 Requirements

By Super Admin ·

Electricity Does Not Give Second Chances

Electrocution is one of the leading causes of fatal workplace accidents in India. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and the Indian Electricity Rules 1956 have clear requirements for electrical safety signage — yet compliance is often poor because factories focus on general safety signs and overlook the electrical-specific requirements.

Regulatory Requirements

Indian Electricity Rules 1956

  • Rule 32: "Danger" notices shall be affixed in a conspicuous position to all equipment operating at voltage exceeding 250V
  • Rule 33: "Danger" notices near electrical equipment shall include the voltage
  • Rule 45: Warning signs on overhead lines and their supports

CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2010

  • Regulation 30: "Danger" boards shall be hung on all equipment under repair or maintenance
  • Regulation 35: Caution boards at transformer installations, substations, and switchyards

Essential Electrical Safety Signs

HT/LT Panel Rooms

  • "Danger: High Voltage — XXX kV" — specific voltage must be stated
  • "Authorised Personnel Only"
  • "Do Not Switch Under Load" (for air-break switches)
  • Step-and-touch potential warning for transformer enclosures
  • Fire extinguisher type sign — CO2 only for electrical fires
  • "Do Not Use Water on Electrical Fires"

Panel Boards and Distribution Boards

  • Voltage identification on every panel
  • Circuit identification labels
  • "Isolate Before Opening" warning

LOTO (Lock Out / Tag Out) Signage

  • "This Equipment Has Been Locked Out" tags
  • LOTO procedure boards at each isolation point
  • "Danger: Do Not Operate — Locked Out"
  • "Do Not Remove Lock Unless Authorised"

Arc Flash Labels

Large factories with HT installations should display:

  • Arc flash hazard level label on each panel
  • Required PPE level (HRC/ARC rating category)
  • Minimum safe working distance

Overhead Lines

  • "Danger: Overhead Electrical Lines" — for cranes, vehicles, and work platforms
  • Minimum clearance signs under overhead lines

Material Considerations

Electrical safety signs have specific material requirements:

  • Non-conductive material — signs mounted on or near electrical equipment must not be conductive (avoid bare aluminium near live equipment)
  • Static-dissipative in sensitive electronic areas
  • Heat-resistant near transformers (oil-cooled transformers can reach 65°C surface temperature)

Our electrical safety signs comply with IE Rules 1956 and CEA Regulations. Browse electrical safety signs or order custom voltage-specific signs for your panels.
