The Most Expensive Square Footage in India — And Its Unique Hazards

Data centres are rapidly becoming India's most critical infrastructure. With the Digital India initiative, cloud computing growth, and data localisation requirements, new data centres are being built across Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Noida at an unprecedented rate. And while they look nothing like a typical factory — no production lines, no welding, no chemical drums — they have their own distinct set of hazards that require specialised safety signage.

Electrical Safety Signs

Data centres are, fundamentally, massive electrical installations:

  • "Danger: 11kV/33kV HT Supply" on incoming power transformer rooms
  • "Danger: UPS — Live Even When Main Power Is Off" — critical because electricians assume power is off when the mains are isolated, but UPS batteries remain live
  • "Danger: Busbar — High Current" on busway distribution systems
  • "Authorised Personnel Only" on every electrical room
  • LOTO signs at every PDU (Power Distribution Unit)
  • "Arc Flash Hazard — PPE Required" with specific PPE level (HRC/CAT rating)

Battery Room Signs

Large UPS battery banks (VRLA or lithium-ion) present significant hazards:

  • "Battery Room — No Smoking / No Naked Flame"
  • "Hydrogen Gas Risk — Ensure Ventilation" (VRLA batteries)
  • "Corrosive — Sulphuric Acid" GHS sign (VRLA batteries)
  • "Danger: DC Voltage — XXX VDC"
  • Emergency eye wash station sign

Fire Suppression System Signs

Data centres use gas-based fire suppression (FM200, Novec 1230, or Inergen) instead of water sprinklers:

  • "Warning: Gas Fire Suppression System — Evacuate Immediately When Alarm Sounds"
  • "Caution: Area Protected by FM200 / Novec 1230"
  • "Do Not Re-Enter After Gas Discharge Without Clearance"
  • "Emergency Abort Button" identification
  • "Hold Door Open to Prevent Gas Discharge" — at doors that, when opened, inhibit discharge
  • Manual release point identification signs

This is critical: a worker trapped in a server hall during FM200 discharge faces oxygen displacement risk. The evacuation warning signs and pre-discharge alarm procedure signs are literally life-saving.

Server Hall Signs

  • "Hot Aisle" / "Cold Aisle" identification — for HVAC-aware navigation
  • "ESD Protected Area — Wear Wrist Strap" (Electrostatic Discharge)
  • "Overhead Cable Tray — Do Not Exceed Load"
  • "Emergency Power Off (EPO)" button identification — bright red, with clear instructions
  • "No Food or Drink"
  • Raised floor load capacity signs

Access Control Signs

  • "Restricted Area — Biometric Access Only"
  • "CCTV Surveillance in Operation"
  • "Tailgating Prohibited"
  • Visitor escort requirement signs

Diesel Generator Yard Signs

  • "Danger: Diesel Fuel Storage"
  • "Hearing Protection Required" when DG sets running
  • "Exhaust Gas — Do Not Stand Near Exhaust Stack"
  • Fire extinguisher location signs
