CPCB Environmental Compliance Signs for Indian Factories: Pollution Control and Waste Management
Environmental Signs: The Forgotten Compliance Category
Most factories focus their signage efforts on worker safety — PPE signs, fire signs, emergency signs. But there is another category of mandatory signs that often gets overlooked: environmental compliance signage required by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs).
CPCB/SPCB Required Signs
Hazardous Waste Storage
Under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules 2016:
- "Caution: Hazardous Waste Storage Area" at the entry of every TSDF (temporary storage and disposal facility)
- Waste category identification signs — identifying the waste code and description per CPCB schedule
- "No Smoking / No Naked Flame" in hazardous waste areas
- Emergency spill procedure boards
- PPE requirements for waste handling
- "Authorised Personnel Only"
ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) Signage
- Process flow identification signs — each tank/stage of the ETP
- Chemical storage signs (for treatment chemicals: alum, poly-electrolyte, lime, acid, alkali)
- "Caution: Open Tank — Fall Hazard"
- "Biological Hazard — Treated/Untreated Effluent"
- Discharge point identification
STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) Signage
- Similar to ETP signage
- "Treated Water — Not Potable" — for recycled water outlets
- Colour-coded pipe identification for recycled water (typically purple per IS standard)
Emission Monitoring
- CEMS (Continuous Emission Monitoring System) identification board at the stack
- "Stack Emission Monitoring Point"
- Consent to operate details display (some SPCBs require this)
Waste Segregation Signs
Under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and BMW (Bio-Medical Waste) Rules:
- Colour-coded waste bin identification — Green (biodegradable), Blue (recyclable), Black (non-recyclable), Red (hazardous/biomedical)
- Pictogram and text for each bin category
- "Do Not Mix Waste — Segregate at Source"
- E-waste collection point signs — per E-Waste Management Rules
Display Board Requirements
Many SPCBs require factories to display:
- Consent to Operate (CTO) board — displaying consent number, validity, and consented parameters
- Environmental policy display
- Emergency environmental response contacts
Our environmental compliance signs cover CPCB/SPCB requirements. Browse environmental signs or contact us for a factory environmental signage package that covers all Pollution Control Board requirements.
