Boiler Room Safety Signs in India: IBR and Factories Act Requirements

The Most Regulated Room in the Factory

The boiler room is perhaps the most heavily regulated space in any Indian factory. The Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR) 1950, the Factories Act, and state boiler inspectorate requirements all impose specific safety signage mandates. A boiler explosion is catastrophic — signage is the first line of hazard communication.

IBR and Statutory Signage Requirements

Boiler Identification

  • Boiler registration number plate — IBR certification number, maximum working pressure, SWP
  • "Boiler Room — Authorised Personnel Only"
  • Boiler inspector contact details board

Pressure and Temperature Warnings

  • "Danger: High Pressure — XX kg/cm²"
  • "Danger: High Temperature — Steam at XXX°C"
  • "Do Not Exceed Maximum Working Pressure"
  • "Check Pressure Gauge and Safety Valve Daily"

Operational Safety

  • "Do Not Operate Boiler Without Valid Boiler Attendant Certificate"
  • "Water Level Must Be Maintained Above Minimum Mark"
  • "Blow-Down Procedure: Follow SOP"
  • "Emergency Shutdown Procedure" display board

Steam Line Identification

  • Pipe colour coding per IS 2379 (steam lines: silver/grey with flow direction arrows)
  • "Caution: Hot Surface — Steam Line"
  • "Do Not Touch — Surface Temperature Exceeds 65°C"
  • Valve identification tags/signs

Fuel Storage

  • "Danger: Fuel Oil Storage" (for oil-fired boilers)
  • "Danger: LPG/Natural Gas Pipeline" (for gas-fired boilers)
  • "No Smoking / No Naked Flame" around fuel storage and gas pipelines

Emergency Equipment Signs

  • Fire extinguisher location signs — CO2 type for boiler rooms
  • Emergency isolation valve identification
  • First aid burn treatment location
  • Emergency exit — must never be blocked by equipment or fuel storage

Material Considerations

Boiler rooms are hot (ambient 40-50°C+), humid, and sometimes expose signs to steam condensation. Use:

  • Aluminium plate or high-temperature-resistant ACP
  • Mechanical mounting (adhesive fails in heat and humidity)
  • UV-resistant ink (boiler rooms near windows can have high UV exposure)
